The aim of this article is to demonstrate that nuclear fusion is a serious and acceptable option for the long-term supply of energy, although it will probably take 40 to 50 years before it can be used economically. JET is providing the design data for the next stage of development from 1995, NET (or ITER) and this in turn will lead to DEMO around 2015. There then follows a report on the allocation of work within the European Fusion Programme and also co-operation extending beyond Europe. In the final summary, the status of controlled nuclear fusion and the European concentration on magnetic confinement, particularly on the basis of the Tokamak principle, are mentioned. Although the serviceability and the usefulness of a fusion reactor have not been demonstrated by a prototype, significant progress is expected from such devices as NET. Nuclear fusion so far represents the only known candidate for long-term energy supply beside regenerative sources of energy and breeder reactors.
