The objective of this research is to study the effects of sea-water corrosion, cathodic protection and variable amplitude fatigue loads on the initiation and early growth of fatigue cracks from notches in a typical offshore structural steel. The linear elastic assessment of the pseudo-notch tip stress amplitude is found to be an adequate measure of the elastic-plastic notch tip strain amplitude, for the long cyclic lives of interest here. Results show clearly the detrimental effect of sea-water corrosion and the beneficial effects of cathodic protection at low stresses. Similar trends are observed under variable amplitude loading but the analysis of rms notch tip strains in this case does not give such satisfactory agreement with known S-N curves for constant amplitude loading.
