Abstract

This study has resulted in the development of new measuring means to improve monitoring of the carbonisation process and to help follow the ageing of batteries and extend their working life. The PYROFIL probe is a new design since it is not water cooled. It can provide the vertical temperature profile for the walls of heating flues in thirty seconds or so. In the course of the experiments the probe proved to be a valuable tool in helping to control batteries of coke furnaces. The extra long suction pyrometer is a tool which is complementary to the PYROFIL probe, providing information about the combustion process in flues and giving access to flame lengths. Still in the diagnostic field, an important stage has been completed in the study of a cooled endoscope to inspect the state of refractory materials. In the field of on-line control, the accent has been on developing new methods of detecting anomalies so that the plant can be kept in good condition. Two techniques have been developed in this study: detection of faulty charging of furnaces and detection of returning gas.
