Evaluation of fatigue resistance of spot welded joints allowing for residual field constraints
The purpose of this review is a better understanding of the fatigue strength of spot welded joints so as to work out fatigue design rules using fracture mechanics criteria. MAT - to analyse the distribution of stresses in the vicinity of the weld spots in various joint modes - to determine the levels of flange stresses between the spots and the local residual stresses in the crack propagation area - to provide a model for these stresses and integrate them into the calculation of the stress intensity factors required for an estimation of the fatigue service life of multiple spot welded joints.
