The objective of this research is to check whether the Ca-treatment of stainless steels improves machinability as it does in the case of construction steels, while ensuring good deformability and corrosion resistance. It is extremely important to achieve this objective because machining often represents about 50% of the fabrication cost of finished components. The results of the research, conducted on steels produced in the works, demonstrates that Ca-treatment considerably improves machinability, especially at high temperatures. The amount of improvement depends on the composition of the inclusions. Ca-treatment has a positive effect on the cold deformability of stainless steels. The corrosion resistance of Ca-treated steels is close to, or slightly inferior to, that of the basic steels, but it is decisively better than that of resulphured steels.
