A computational model of the PBX-M tokamak
The simulation code TSC has been modified to include a detailed model of the actual shape control feedback system used in the PBX-M experiment. The three principal eigenmodes of the plasma shape are controlled using seven independently controlled coil currents. The plasma is evolved in time using a flux surface averaged transport description, including the effects of neoclassical resistivity, ohmic heating, NB heating and current drive and bootstrap currents. The code predictions are compared in detail with data from several experimental shots. Using MHD stability analysis of the simulated equilibrium, it is demonstrated how different preprogramming of the coil currents and of the heating sources, and different shape feedback coefficients can affect the maximum achievable beta.
