Project Marina was set up by the Commission of the European Communities to look at the radiological impact of radionuclides, both natural and anthropogenic, on Northern European marine waters. Naturally-occurring radionuclides make the largest contribution to radioactivity in marine waters. The next most significant contribution is from civil nuclear site discharges. However, the maximum collective dose rate from this source (330 man Sv/a) is around an order of magnitude lower than that from natural marine radioactivity, and about three orders of magnitude lower than the collective dose rate to the EC populations from all natural radioactivity, including that of terrestrial origin. The collective exposures from weapons test fallout and Chernobyl fallout are somewhat less than that from civil nuclear discharges, and the collective exposure from seadumping very much smaller.
