The geothermal interest of the Acqui Terme area derives mainly from the presence of natural hot springs ranging from 40 C to 70 C. During July/August '89 the first exploratory well was drilled with the aim of investigating the geothermal potential of the area. Previous surface exploration had given evidence of a fractured crystalline basement at shallow depths acting as a reservoir. However, at 500m depth, the crystalline basement was still not reached. After 72 hours of flow tests, the measured temperature was 43 C but the flow rate was only 5 litres per minute and thus too low for any kind of use. The well was then closed.
