In recent years the closed die forgings for the automotive industry were replaced by castings whose production costs were lower. There was therefore a reduction of steel billet production. However, the development of micro alloyed steels limited these reductions, and further development work is necessary. Billet costs for closed die forgings could be reduced if continuously cast material could be used as cast. Another development would be to increase the toughness of microalloy steels. During the production of rails an increase in the cooling rate from the rolling finishing temperature has led to improved toughness. Similar investigations should be carried out for closed die forgings. Similar properties were obtained from crank shafts as for conventionally processed steel, but slightly lower fatigue values were obtained from axles. The results indicate that crank shafts can be produced by using as cast continuously cast steel. Further investigations are necessary for axles. Increasing the cooling rate of closed die forgings made from micro alloy steels did not improve toughness properties. Recrystallisation and grain growth could not be suppressed.
