A worked example concerning the safety analysis of the sub-seabed option for the disposal of high-level radioactive waste is presented. The major elements required to perform the analysis are outlined, and the methodology adopted is described. A number of important concepts are introduced with reference to geological land-based options, including the development of scenarios, and the definition of radiological pathways and cut-off times. The way in which the seabed option is divided up for modelling and analysis is described. The many assumptions and simplifications required to do this are discussed with reference to each of the sub-environments into which the option was divided, showing how the various sub-modules are built up, given the complex nature of the real system. The performance of the final overall systems model is illustrated by following a release pulse through the system and describing how the various barriers contribute to the overall retention of migrating radionuclides. The results of the base case assessment and of the stochastic sensitivity analysis are presented and discussed.
