Orientation and actions of the European Community in the assessment and prevention of indoor air pollution
Research on indoor air pollution by organic chemicals has been carried out at the JRC since 1981. The objective is to obtain information on the actual concentrations of these compounds in indoor spaces and to develop analytical methods for such investigations. The COST 613 project on indoor air quality and its impact on man aims at identifying pollutants, assessing population exposure and health effects, developing reference methods and preparing the basis for possible regulatory actions. Regulations already approved or in the final stage before approval are: Directive 89/106 on the approximation of laws relating to construction materials, a directive on labelling of tobacco products with warning messages and a recommendation on the protection of the public against indoor exposure to radon.
