A study was made of the changes in the surface chemistry and the corrosion properties of stainless steels after exposure to a variety of natural and artificial environments. Samples of four common stainless alloy grades (the ferritic AISI types 409 and 430 and the austenitic AISI types 304 and 316) were examined. These materials were in both the acid descaled (2B) and the vertical bright annealed (BA) mill finish condition. Data sets were generated covering the monthly environmental conditions at four atmospheric exposure sites, the XPS surface analyses of the eight test materials after periods of 6, 12 and 18 months at these sites, and the changes in four electrochemical corrosion parameters after exposure. These data were supplemented by similar data from exposure under laboratory conditions for up to 6 months.
