Turbulence modelling in naturally convecting fluids
This report presents an introduction to turbulence modelling with applications to heat transfer in a molten pool. The turbulence closure problem is discussed and some approximations and methods are given for determining certain unknowns in the transport equations. Three methods of closure are given:the k-epsilon model, the algebraic-stress model and the full Reynolds stress model, this last being the most general of the three. Finally, two of these closures are applied to the problem of a strongly convective flow. These provide a turbulent solution in the limit of steady-state and no mean flow.
