  • Chemical and physical processes in the molten areas of the furnace by consideration of the thermal conductivity through the blast furnace hearth and floor


Studies were made of different areas in the lower part of the blast furnace. Knowledge acquired with the aid of mathematical models was corroborated by measurements at the furnace. For the first time, thermocouples were installed all along the tap-hole channel in order to determine the temperature field in this area. When relining the blast furnace, the carbon bricks that were installed were provided with strain gauges. This made it possible to register the behaviour of the refractory lining after the blowing-in of the blast furnace. The radial temperature profile, the distribution of coke, metal and slag, and the coke grain size distribution were determined. In laboratory tests the reduction mechanisms of silicic acid were studied using a thermobalance. Flow-pattern tests showed the importance of the metal/slag interlayer location for the tappable quantity ratio. The tests with the electric analogue simulation model confirmed the importance of the sump depth in the hearth for the useful life of the refractory lining.
