Current drive via Landau damping of kinetic Alfven wave in toroidal geometry
It is found that Landau-damping of low-phase-velocity v(p) waves (below the thermal electron velocity v(te)) is profoundly affected by toroidicity. The proportion alpha(u) of the wave energy imparted to the untrapped particles significantly exceeds their numerical fraction. Computed values of alpha(u) versus v(p)/v(te) are presented. The implications of these results for low-phase-velocity-wave current drive are assessed.
