Abstract

The intensity distribution of the light emitted in inverse-photoemission transitions in the (011) mirror plane, commonly known as the gamma XUL mirror plane, of a Cu(100) crystal has been measured. The distributions agree with the dipole- transition model for inverse photoemission. The orientation of the dipole axis for bulk transitions qualitatively follows calculations with a combined interpolation scheme. The applicability of the Fresnel formulae for the transmission and refraction of light emitted in the surface region is discussed.
