Determination of organochlorine compounds and PCB congeners in environmentally contaminated sediments
The residue levels of organochlorine compounds and PCB congeners in surface sediments from two rivers and the Thermaikos Gulf of Northern Greece are determined. Considerable variations between the PCB-congeners are observed for most of the samples. The various chlorobenzenes show the same patterns as the PCBs, indicating a common pollution source. The concentrations of organochlorine pesticides and PCBs compared to those reported in the literature are relatively close to levels found for slightly polluted areas. The highest levels of these compounds are found in the Thermaikos Gulf, where the untreated municipal sewage of the city of Thessaloniki is discharged.
