The effects of fuels on combustion characteristics (including ignition delay) and on engine performance and emissions, are studied at a range of speeds, loads and injection timings. Tests at reduced temperature and cold start tests are included and methods for measuring ignition delay are assessed. No single parameter is found to rank fuels correctly for all aspects of performance under all conditions. Parameters such as ignition delay are better predictors of fuel performance than Cetane number, particularly in respect of hydrocarbon emissions at light load retarded conditions, fuel consumption and some aspects of cold starting. However, Cetane number is a better predictor of combustion noise index, light load hydrocarbons at advanced timings and cold starting at 0 C. Tests are unable to show any significant correlation with particulate emissions except possibly under light load retarded conditions.
