Very little data exist on the subject of the inter-zonal airflows arising from temperature differentials in passive solar buildings, despite the importance of air movement in the transport of heat within a building. This report describes the development of a portable multi tracer-gas system for measuring inter-zonal air flow rates and infiltration rates in up to four zones. The advantages and disadvantages of such systems are discussed. Data from multizone measurements made in a number of houses are presented. The theoretical basis for deriving flow-rates from tracer measurements is discussed. Airflow models are investigated and guidelines for estimating inter-zonal flow-rates including new values for empirically derived coefficients are presented.
