This project involves the design, construction and operation of a large scale cold model fluidised bed. Several diagnostic devices are developed so that gas and solids flow patterns within the bed can be investigated and related to tube wear patterns. The results show that wear pattern is closely related to the bubble activity in a shallow bed and a "wear parameter" can be deduced which gives a qualitative prediction of the wear pattern. It is shown that tube banks have a large influence on the bubble activity pattern of the fluidised bed, as closely packed tubes divert bubbles to areas with few tubes and widely spaced tube banks lead to vertical bubble "tracks" within the bed. The mechanism causing tube wear in shallow beds appears to be that bubbles transport solids to the tubes and these particles cause wear, probably by impingement erosion. Within a deeper bed, the bubbles move material out of their path, leading to the tubes being "washed" by particles. Recommendations on tube bank design are given together with suggestions for further investigations.
