Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

Under contract to the Community Bureau of Reference, the National Physical Laboratory has developed a wavelength stabilisation scheme, to enable the recently introduced green and yellow helium-neon lasers to be used routinely as light sources in interferometers. The project has realised its aim of developing an automatic and reliable system, suitable for use particularly for the measurement of gauge blocks: for this purpose a single colour of laser light (eg He-Ne red) is insufficient. A preliminary feasibility study highlighted several areas of difficulty. Subsequently suitable mechanical, optical and electronic systems were developed. A number of prototypes have been made, whose performance exceeds the required specifications.
