This report presents the results of the laboratory experimentation and works trials for the application of the FAST ( Forced Acceleration of Solidification Technology) process to the continuous casting of electrical and stainless steel grades. The new technology involves feeding a cored wire into the c.c. mould through the tundish stopper rod. The solid reagents (granulated metals such as Fe, Al, Ti, B etc), encased within the metal sheath act as cooling and/or alloying elements for the liquid steel in order to control the alloy content as well as the amount of superheat of the molten metal and hence the primary solidification structure of the slab. The geometry of the wires and the feeding rate of the wires used in works trials were established on the basis of results provided by a mathematical model. From the works trials the following findings have been obtained : - The system for feeding cored wire into the mould through the stopper rod and the submerged nozzle with lateral outlets is operationally feasible. - Actual critical feed rates for the wire are higher than the theoretical ones indicated by the mathematical model. - Maximum supplementary cooling of liquid pool amounts to 0.61% of the weight of steel cast. - Maximum increase in Al content in the high Si electrical steels is 0.33%, the reagent yield being more than 90%. - Maximum increase in Ti content in the stainless steel is 500 ppm, the yield being around 90%. - The application of FAST on c.c. slabs can ensure the modification of primary solidification structure up to 100% equiaxed zone.
