Follow-up studies on methods of using and converting coal
The object of the research is to characterise interactions between carbon solids and carbon binders in terms of the rheological action of mixtures in paste form, and to define a general index representing some compatibility between the solid and the binder. Some measurements taken on baked compounds are defined by penetration of the bonding tar into the coke; determining and measuring the affected and unaffected tars by the difference in coke output; determining the preferential orientation of fibrous textures and measuring the anisotropy of electrical conductivity. The last part of the study describes the reactivity of coal in an oxidising atmosphere under pressure. The report demonstrates that the processes of pyrolysis and gasification of coal under pressure can be studied together in a single step. The results show the importance of getting as close as possible to the conditions which obtain in an industrial gas generator, in order to determine weight loss in the pyrolysis phase and reactivity during gasification.
