The objective of the research project was to study the metallurgical impact of bath stirring in a UHP arc furnace producing heats of chromium-alloyed steel. In an initial test run, bath stirring was found to exert a positive influence on the homogeneity of the bath (bath temperature and composition). A reduction in the amount of chromium passing into the slag by intensifying the bath/slag reactions was achieved only with prolonged stirring periods. The amount of reductant determines the chromium recovery. The tests showed that in a furnace operating at low current intensity, improved convection within the bath caused by stirring has a decisive bearing on the heating rate. A mathematical model was developed to simulate the mixing of the melt in an arc furnace featuring a bottom stirring plug. As the measured values and computational results show relatively good agreement, this model can be used to assess the homogeneity of the bath in terms of temperature and composition.
