Abstract

A summer school with the theme "Modern problems in plasma physics" took place in Bad Honnef between the 28th of August and the 2nd of September 1989. The summer school aimed at acquainting students and scientists with selected problems in nuclear fusion and low temperature plasmas and their various applications in modern technology. During the first part of the school an overview of plasmas and their most important uses was given. Elementary properties of plasmas used in nuclear fusion as well as in technology were introduced. This was followed by a discussion of basic mechanisms of material erosion, particle reflection and release and the plasma-induced emission of materials. A major part of the school was devoted to a presentation on diagnostic methods and applications.
