Abstract

Rock cored samples from a granitic batholite crossed with a uranium enriched quartz dike were used to investigate the retention properties of crystalline rocks. Small scale infiltration experiments were conducted on samples with various alterations. Special pressure cells were developed for migration tests through samples of low permeability. Hydrodynamic characteristics were determined with non-sorbing tracers. Transport experiments with Tc, Np and U were carried out in the presence of natural organic matter and under various redox conditions. The interpretation of data from discrete points is more difficult when dealing with fractured systems. Results from convective experiments were then compared with static sorption tests and with field observations on uranium enrichment in microfractures. A selective leaching technique was applied in order to identify uranium association with the rock matrix, iron oxides and clay material in fracture fillings.
