The beat wave experiment concept using microwaves is described. It is shown that large amplitude (1.0E4 V/cm) plasma waves can be resonantly excited by beating high frequency microwave pumps in an open resonator filled with plasma of subcritical density. In order to get interesting effects, the density must be large enough, and the 2 microwave frequencies should be of an order of 10 times the plasma frequency, in order to reduce refraction effects. The longitudinal component of the E field is used for accelerating particles, whereas the radial component, which is decoupled from the longitudinal field, could be at the origin microwave beam defocussing.
