This report has been prepared with the primary objective of establishing a methodology for assessing human intrusion into deep underground repositories for radioactive wastes. The disposal concepts considered are those studied in the performance assessment studies Pagis and Pacoma, coordinated by the CEC. These comprise four types of host rock: clay, granite, salt and the sub-seabed. Following a review of previous assessments of human intrusion, a list of relevant human activities is derived. This forms the basis for detailed characterisation of groundwater abstraction and of exploitation of mineral and other resources. Approaches to assessment of intrusion are reviewed and the estimation of probabilities for specific types of intrusion events is considered. Calculational schemes are derived for specific intrusion events and dosimetric factors are presented. A review is also presented of the capacity for reduction of the risks associated with intrusions. Volume 2 contains three appendices on the characterisation of groundwater abstraction activities, characterisation of mineral and other resource exploitation and assessment of the probabilities of human intrusion.
