Harmonisation programmes for SO(2) and suspended particulates monitoring : An EEC experience
For the implementation of the EC Directive Nr.779/80/EEC on SO(2) and suspended particulates, reference materials have been prepared and circulated by JRC Ispra for an intercomparison of calibration methods and procedures. By means of a mobile laboratory, equipped with comparison instruments, parallel measurements have been performed in the networks. These instruments, also used for the measurement of the reference materials, were calibrated and operated according to the revised reference methods of the Directive. The crosschecks have been discussed in relation to an arbitrary band of +/- 10 microg/m3 +/- 10% of the comparison instrument results. Inadequate sampling and a wrong or incomplete application of the revised reference methods seem to be the main causes of the deviations.
