Abstract

The High Flux Reactor (HFR) at Petten is operated under contract by the Netherlands Energy Research Foundation (ECN). It is a light water cooled and moderated multi-purpose research reactor of the closed-tank in pool type, operating at 45 MW and offering an extended number of facilities and neutron spectra for various irradiation programmes for both fission and fusion reactors, fundamental research with neutrons, isotope production, etc. The HFR is equipped with numerous service facilities for its experimental use during irradiation and is embedded in the infrastructures of both the JRC and the ECN, thus offering excellent facilities for pre- and post-irradiation services to reactor users. The reactor and its ancillary equipment has been continuously upgraded and modernised. It has undergone performance upgrading (vessel replacement), installation upgrading (replacement of ageing equipment) and "software" upgrading. Even after nearly 30 years of operation it can be regarded as a modern research tool.
