Over the past decade, the European Radiation Protection Programme has stimulated research in the field of exposure to radon and thoron and their daughter products. In the period 1980-1984, efforts devoted to the determination of the distribution of exposure yielded a reliable picture of the average exposures of the European population as well as an indication of regions where higher than average exposure may occur. In 1987, an ad hoc working party of the Article 31 Group of Experts published a report outlining the present situation within the Community. The data available at this moment are presented; the regulatory aspects, an outline of the five years' programme finishing in December 1989, as well as the main results obtained, and finally the main lines of the new 1990-1991 programme.
