Carbonaceous and fly-ash reference materials : The role of BCRFunded under: FP2-BCR 4
The Community Bureau of Reference (BCR) of the Commission of the European Communities has produced a number of reference samples of coal and coke during the past twelve years. At least nine coal reference samples are now available. These samples include coals of varying rank of which all the major analytical parameters normally encountered in industrial use have been certified, together with several trace elements. A separate series of samples has also been certified for sulphur, and work is currently in progress to include the certification of different forms of sulphur in one coal. An outline is given of the methods of sample preparation, the steps taken to ensure the homogeneity of the samples and the comprehensive analytical campaigns used to establish the certified reference values of the various parameters. The statistical method of treatment of the data is described, and methods of ensuring the stability of the coal are indicated.
