Optimisation of urban layout with respect to solar irradiation
The paper explores and illustrates the use of a C.A.D.-type design aid for assessing the effects of obstructions on solar radiation received on building surfaces. Parametric studies are presented for simple rectilinear structures in order to illustrate the potential of this type of design aid and to present results of general applicability for urban layout design. Aspects of layout design addressed include the effect of varying the building separation to height ratio, sloping ground, staggering successive rows and orientation.
