Abstract

After an introduction on the main features of the D-3He fusion reactions from the point of view of fusion energy production, the feasibility aspects of power stations based on a tokamak reactor using D and 3He as fuel are presented and discussed. In doing this, reference is made to two typical reactor design approaches, one conservative and the other advanced. The feasibility aspects investigated include ignition problems, fuel supply, plasma refuelling, power density and heat fluxes, energy conversion to electricity and toroidal magnetic field and plasma disruptions. A strategy for the development of the D-3He fuel cycle is discussed.
