The present investigation has demonstrated that in the size range 0.100 to 2.0 mm the spirals, and in particular the LD4 type, can successfully compete with slurry jigs, as to separation parameters, ease of control, investment and operating costs. At least for particles up to 2 mm, there is no reason to prefer a slurry jig to the spirals. Such a size limit coincides with what is generally recognised as the lowest particle-size limit for jigs operating without feldspar, which makes the spirals particularly interesting for plants treating the intermediate particle size with jigs. This report gives some information on ancillary operations connected with spiral applications, such as preliminary screening, pulp splitting and the processing of particles below 100 microns for a sub-bituminous coal.
