  • Low carbon free-machining continuous casting steel billet production for direct rolling giving a product equivalent in defects and machinability to that obtained by conventional methods

Abstract

The research has been directed to the field of low carbon free- machining continuous casting steel billet, the objective being to find the necessary parameters for producing a billet that rolls without conditioning and gives a product similar in defects and machinability to that obtained by conventional means. During the first period of the research, production parameters in E.A.F., Ladle Furnace and Continuous Casting for a group of 44 low carbon free-machining steel heats were controlled, trying to relate them to as-cast billet quality (cracks, pinholes, etc.) and to the yield and quality of the end product. The research was continued through observation and assessment of the cracks observed at the first stage of the rolling sequence and analysis of the parameters obtained in the hot torsion test of the tested heats, that is, the maximum torque and the torque at fracture. The dependence between the corners hot ductility and the Mn/S ratio was also studied. End product sulphide morphology was assessed through the IBAS 2000 image analyser on the centre and near surface of the samples.
