The coking of coals prone to swelling in half and full-scale coke ovens
In the course of the reconstruction measures carried out at the Prosper coke plant of Ruhrkohle AG, Bottrop, the coke ovens had to be taken out of operation in 1986. The shutdown of these coke ovens, which had been in production for a maximum of 10 years, offered the unique chance to determine the loading limit of intact heating-walls when swelling-prone coals are employed. It was furthermore found possible to shock-cool coke oven charges of various blend composition after partial carbonisation. The research programme was accordingly divided into three separate project components: 1. Coking of swelling-prone coals in full-scale coke ovens. 2. Shock-cooling of coke oven charges. 3. Tests for determining the internal gas pressure using swelling-prone coals in the semi-technical coking oven - tests accompanying the measurement programme at Versuchskokerei.
