Research into the influence of the design of permanent support systems on gate road stability under differing geological conditions and mining methods
It has been suggested that the required pack reaction to roof lowering in MN per m run of pack is five times the extracted height in m, in order to minimise gateroad distortion. This relationship was investigated by observations underground, which were interpreted by numerical and physical modelling techniques. Pack design guidelines were produced and possible innovations in permanent support system construction were proposed and evaluated by field trials. These included modifications to monolithic pack performance, the design of systems for a soft floor situation and the design of steel arches with increased yield strength appropriate to asymmetrically distributed loads.
