Chemistry in environmental emergencies
In a modern and advanced management of environmental problems, computerised mass spectrometry can play a determinant role, thanks to its high sensitivity, specificity and separative capacity. Some of the most recent couplings to other instruments and the new techniques of soft ionisation are illustrated and the performances obtained using mass spectrometry are compared with those obtained with other analytical techniques. The prospects for wider use of this technique in environmental studies are examined, considering both the possible use of new instruments, and its use in new areas such as molecular dosimetry or the studies of migration and transformation of organic and inorganic contaminants in the soil and in the atmosphere.
