The objectives of the BRE/JRC penetrator experiments planned for the Marion Dufresne 1985 long-coring cruise (ESOPE) were: i) to fill the gaps in the data base needed for the development of predictive models ii) to develop new, more versatile penetrator instrumentation (ie LFTS); iii) to compare penetrator results with geotechnical measurements made on recovered long cores at as many different locations within the GME and SNAP study areas as possible; iv) to compare the results of the penetrator tests made with different instrumentation systems at the same site (i.e. ADSS, LFTS and the French trailed-wire system).
