Abstract

The BRE/JRC penetrator experiments performed during the 1985 Marion Dufresne long-coring cruise (ESOPE) have been described by Freeman et al. (1987). This paper describes the analysis of the results obtained from these experiments and compares the measured behaviour in the sediment with computed predictions. Three aspects of penetrator behaviour are considered: the motion through the water column, the attenuation of the acoustic signal by the sediment during penetration and the calculation of sediment strength from the observed decelerations.
