Abstract

A mechanism for neutron emission from deuterated metals is proposed, based on known phenomena of hydrogen precipitation in supersaturated metals. Transient electric fields are assumed to produce energetic deuterons and hence neutrons from D(d,n) 3He reactions. The mechanism predicts neutron yields compatible with those reported in some of the experiments and implies a certain degree of experimental irreproducibility.
