The PASSYS project : Phase 1 : Subgroup Simplified Design Tools
The PASSYS project is a European concerted action in the field of Passive Solar Energy Application to Buildings. This document is the Simplified Design Tools (SDT) subgroup's report for the first phase. The subgroup decided to focus its activities on the development of a correlation based, simplified calculation method named PASSPORT, which enables a rapid assessment of the energy and comfort performance of Passive Solar Components (PSC) and buildings. The methodology used was to carry out analysis and sensitivity studies on typical buildings, by means of the reference tool of PASSYS i.e. the detailed simulation model ESP. As a result, it is found that the free gain utilisation factor can be calculated as a function of the gain to load ratio and a continuous parameter describing the thermal inertia. The method of calculating the inertia-parameter is defined. Other results deal with multizoning, intermittent heating, control of inside conditions, outdoor longwave radiation, PSC and comfort.
