The PASSYS project : Phase 1 : Final report of the Subgroup Model Validation and Development
PASSYS is a collaborative European-wide research project which aims at the development of test procedures for passive solar building components, the validation of a simulation program and the better understanding of passive solar systems. This report concludes the activity of the Model Validation and Development Subgroup during the PASSYS Programme Phase 1 from 1986 to 1989. The main effort has been put into the identification of a validation methodology that will increase confidence in the simulation program to which it has been applied. This methodology comprises algorithm studies, code checking, analytical verification, inter-model comparison, sensitivity studies and empirical validation. In order to test the validation methodology it has been applied to the simulation program ESP (Environmental Systems Performance), which has been selected as the European reference program for simulation of the thermal performance of buildings and passive solar systems. The outcome of this work is not only a validation methodology but also an improved version of ESP. Several bugs have been corrected and some algorithms replaced or extended. In addition three new program modules have been developed.
