Community Research and Development Information Service - CORDIS

The French Agency for Energy Management (AFME), with the financial backing of the Commission of the European Communities (CEC) has implemented a demonstration programme concerning the electrification of 40 permanent dwellings using photovoltaic generators. The significant scale of this operation has enabled assessment of the various aspects - administrative, economic, technical and sociological - of this mode of electrification. From the technical viewpoint, standardising the installations in power stages of 400 Wp, 800 Wp, 1200 Wp and 1500 Wp enabled the establishment of a component quality policy while at the same time facilitating comparison between the various chosen solutions. Today, the 40 dwellings are electrified and, as a result of measurements of the first installations, it has been possible to establish many energy balance sheets and, in particular, to study the way users manage their energy. Although still costly at present, this mode of electrification becomes more economical for a community than connection to the electricity mains once the dwelling is more than a few hundred metres away. Evolution of photovoltaic systems costs should improve this competitiveness in the future.
