Abstract

A generator of expert systems was selected based on application-specific criteria. With the aid of this generator, an expert system was developed and subsequently tested using the operating data of a Belgian blast furnace. Thanks to its design, the system can be deployed in real time with only a few minor modifications. One major function of this expert system is to check the reliability of the data before processing using metallurgical models so that the most obvious errors can be eliminated. In an effort to evaluate objectively the operation of the blast furnace, indices are calculated to quantify the proper functioning of the plant and certain subsystems - e.g. the hearth - as well as the operating conditions and characteristic operating parameters. The correlations established between these indices and the blast furnace performances demonstrate their validity and their significance. The improved quantification of certain important and previously inadequately defined phenomena, such as the descent of the materials and the gas distribution, is equally vital. Finally, the expert system developed permits major irregularities of the blast furnace operation to be identified and forecast. With the aid of software, scaffolding and peeling phenomena can be determined using measurements of the wall temperature and heat losses. The position of scaffolds was also determined.
