Operational transient experiments on FBR fuel pins in the High Flux Materials Testing Reactor (HFR) Petten
In the last year over 60 experiments on FBR fuel pins have been performed at the HFR Petten. By suitable design, fast reactor conditions can be simulated, including start-up behaviour, power cycling and ramping, fuel melting, transient overpower and loss-of-flow. This paper describes the typical irradiation device, its instrumentation, some of the available ancillary equipment and some developments. In particular two series of experiments are reported. The first studied fuel behaviour due to multiple operational transients at differing ramp rates, and the second series measured the fuel and/or cladding elongation during a transient.
