Determination of the magnetic field in tokamaks by means of spectroscopy on fast hydrogen beams
The separation pattern of Balmer lines measured in fast hydrogen beams in tokamaks can be used, as has recently been demonstrated on JET, for local identification of the magnetic field direction. But the technique used on JET makes use of the intensity of the multiplet components and thus relies on the availability of plasma models and effective cross sections of sufficient quality, and this makes it prone to error. In this report a method using polarisation measurements is described, which largely eliminates doubtful data. An estimate of the residual experimental error is presented.
