Impaction of radioactive aerosols on nuclear detectors
A system has been developed for measuring in real-time the radioactivity of aerosol impacted directly on an ion-implanted silicon detector. The system has been tested using monodisperse Carnauba wax aerosol tagged with the alpha emitting decay products of 222Rn. Preliminary results show that the best spectral resolution is obtained when aerosol is impacted directly on a bare detector. When a protective mylar form is used on the detector, the resolution becomes similar to the one obtained with a filter system using nuclepore filters.
