The thermal response to deformation of creep damaged specimens of Alloy 800H and AISI 316L stainless steel has been recorded by measuring the temperature at one point on their surfaces. The thermal emission from the specimens during a tensile test has enabled an analysis of the deformation mechanisms and an evaluation of the form of creep damage. The results demonstrate the potential for incorporating thermal emission measurements into conventional experimental techniques to give a complete thermomechanical picture of deformation.
